University of Sri Jayewardenepura Triumphs at Belihuloya XVI Elle Tournament

The Belihuloya XVI Elle Tournament, a hallmark annual event organized by the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, concluded with resounding success this year. The revolutionary Elle team of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura emerged as champions, marking a historic first-time victory at this prestigious tournament.
The tournament, held at the University of Sabaragamuwa Stadium on August 3rd and 4th featured six competitive teams representing major Sri Lankan universities: the University of Sabaragamuwa (hosts), University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Kelaniya, University of Moratuwa, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and Uva Wellassa University.
During the preliminary round, each team faced all others in a round-robin format. The University of Sri Jayewardenepura dominated the competition by winning four out of five matches, thereby topping the points table. The University of Sabaragamuwa matched this performance with four wins of their own but suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat, placing them second on the table and setting up a highly anticipated final between the two strongest teams.

The final was a gripping 30-ball encounter that drew a large and enthusiastic crowd to the stadium. Batting first, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura posted a total of 11 runs, setting a target of 12 for the hosts. The University of Sabaragamuwa matched this total with 11 runs of their own, leading to a thrilling tie that required a super over-five additional balls for each side-to decide the winner.
In the super 05 ball Sabaragamuwa University batted first but failed to score any runs. The University of Sri Jayewardenepura, needing just one run to secure the championship, reached the target in two balls, clinching a dramatic victory and the Belihuloya XVI Elle Tournament title.
This victory is especially significant as it marks the first time the University of Sri Jayewardenepura has won the Belihuloya championship, defeating the formidable hosts on their own ground and cementing their place as a rising powerhouse in university-level Elle.
The success of this year’s tournament once again highlights the enduring popularity of Elle among Sri Lankan universities and showcases the remarkable skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship of the participating teams.
