Inter University Championship Tournament (Men’s/Women’s) – 2024
The Kabaddi tournament, which is an exciting event of the Inter University Championship, was held this year at the main auditorium in South Eastern University. The tournament, held from September 27 to 29, showcased intense competition and spirited performance. The University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) sent both its boys’ and girls’ teams to participate, and both teams displayed remarkable resilience, ultimately finishing as 1st runners-up in their respective categories.
Boys’ Team Journey
The boys’ team had a challenging yet exciting run in the tournament. They began their campaign on September 28, competing in the first round against Easton University and Peradeniya University. The matches were contested won, with USJ demonstrating strong teamwork and strategic play. On September 29, we advanced to the second round, where played with Wayamba University and won the match score with higher points.
In the semifinals, the USJ boys’ team won the match against South Easton University, setting the stage for the highly anticipated final. The final match saw USJ battling Sabaragamuwa University, but despite an impressive performance, the boys’ team was narrowly defeated, earning them the runner-up position.
Girls’ Team Journey
The girls’ team from USJ kicked off their tournament on September 27 with a tough first-round match against the University of Moratuwa and Colombo University. With great teamwork and skill, the girls secured their spot in the next round. On September 28, they played South Easton University in the second round, USJ girls team showed their best performance and won the match through score with higher points. Advancing to the semifinals on September 29, they played with Peradeniya University. A thrilling match saw USJ’s girls emerge victorious, earning their place in the finals.
In the final match against Sabaragamuwa University, the USJ girls gave it their all, but despite their best efforts, they fell short, securing the runner-up position.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our university and mentors who supported these achievements possible. A very special thank you goes to the Coach, Mr. Praveen Weerasinghe, for his expert guidance and leadership, the Head of the Physical Education Department, Mrs.Nishanthi Widanage, for continued support and dedication, and Mrs.Deepika Priyadarshani Madam, in Charge, for her committed and hard work towards preparing the teams. Their invaluable contributions were decisive in the stellar performance of the teams.
With a vision towards the future, both teams will no doubt be further fueled by this experience in the prestigious tournament to come back even stronger in the years to come.
