Inter-University Taekwondo Championship 2024: A Remarkable Triumphfor University of Sri Jayewardenepura
The Inter-University Taekwondo Championship 2024 concluded, presenting the possibilities
of many young martial artists and the good sportsmanship of the state universities out of the
country of Sri Lanka. The three-day event that happened from the 11th to the 13th of
November was located in the University of Moratuwa and was hosted by them. This event
had thrilling competitions both in the poomsae and sparring categories, and eventually,
champions were crowned.
The first day commenced on November 11th with an impressive opening ceremony, followed
by the poomsae events. The events included Individual Male and Female Junior Poomsae,
Individual Male and Female Senior Poomsae, and Team Poomsae for both male and female
categories.
On November 12th, the sparring events kicked off with eight weight categories for both men
and women. Representing universities from across the nation, athletes battled, showcasing
their strength, and determination.
The championship culminated on November 13th with the semi-finals and finals in sparring.
The women’s team of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura emerged as joint champions,
reclaiming the title after seven years. They secured remarkable achievements of 4 gold
medals and 5 bronze medals.
In the men’s category, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura ranked 7th overall, with their
athletes earning 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal.
Women’s Team Achievements
The women’s team delivered an extraordinary performance, claiming gold in four weight
categories:
● N.W.M.U. Sandeepani – Bantam (49–53 kg)
● H.C. Gangodawila – Light (57–62 kg)
● H.M.I. Madushani – Welter (62–67 kg)
● K.D.N.P. Kumara – Middle (67–73 kg)
Bronze medals were also secured by:
● J.A.D.D. Dissanayake – Fin (Below-46 kg)
● K.M.A. Kodagoda – Heavy (Above 73 kg)
In the poomsae events:
● U.H.S. Chathurika won a bronze medal in Junior Poomsae (Female).
● N.W.M.U. Sandeepani claimed bronze in Senior Poomsae (Female).
● The Senior Female Poomsae Team, comprising N.W.M.U. Sandeepani, U.H.S.
Chathurika, and J.A.D.D. Dissanayake also won a bronze medal.
Men’s Team Achievements
The men’s team showed resilience and skill, earning medals in competitive categories:
● A.K.M.H. Khan – Silver Medal in Bantam (58–63 kg)
● A. Harishan – Silver Medal in Heavy (Above 87 kg)
● D.A.S.M. Senarathna – Bronze Medal in Light (68–74 kg)
After a gap of seven years, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura reclaimed the Women’s
Championship, marking a significant achievement in the university’s Taekwondo legacy. The
last time the university triumphed was in 2017 when they also secured the Men’s and Overall
Championships.
This year’s championship highlighted not only the athletes’ determination but also their
relentless pursuit of excellence. The University of Sri Jayewardenepura’s women’s team has
once again marked their name in history, inspiring future generations of Taekwondo
enthusiasts.
