Inter-University Tennis Tournament: A Third Year of Triumphand Unmatched Spirit

The inter-university tennis tournament has become a hallmark of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura’s sports legacy, and this year’s event was nothing short of spectacular. Held on October 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 2024, at the Colombo University tennis courts, it showcased exceptional talent and sportsmanship. With two consecutive championships in 2022 and 2023, the Women’s team entered with high expectations and determination to extend their winning streak. Despite various challenges, the team demonstrated resilience. Months of rigorous preparation, including gym workouts and creative adjustments to practice schedules, paid off as the players displayed outstanding growth, discipline, and teamwork.

The tournament unfolded with thrilling performances, beginning with the group stage, where the team triumphed in all ties, winning the three singles matches and securing the top position. Advancing to the semifinals, the team faced the University of Moratuwa and claimed victory by winning all three singles matches, driven by unwavering determination and the energizing support of enthusiastic spectators. The finals, played against the University of Colombo, were a showcase of skill and flair, with players delivering breathtaking shots and keeping the audience captivated. The singles matches, led by captain P.A.S. Abayawickrama (9/1 ), W.N.G. Fernando (9/2), and G.V.S.D. Jayasinghe (9/1 ), were all decisive victories. For the first time in history, the team
won the championship by sweeping only the singles matches throughout the tournament-a testament to their excellence.

The Men’s tennis team of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura delivered a commendable performance at this year’s inter-university tennis tournament, showcasing their skill and determination against some of the toughest competitors in Sri Lanka. The group stages saw the team dominate with decisive victories over Eastern University of Sri Lanka, University of Ruhuna, and University of Sabaragamuwa, securing their position as group leaders. Each match demonstrated the players’ tactical brilliance, teamwork, and unwavering commitment, reflecting months of preparation amidst challenges. The team’s efforts were a testament to their resilience and the collective spirit of the university.

Advancing to the semifinals, the team faced a formidable opponent in the University of Moratuwa. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to secure a win, marking the end of their championship bid. However, the players quickly regrouped with renewed focus and energy for the consolation finals against the University of Peradeniya. In a highly competitive match, the team showcased their prowess, winning with a decisive 3-1 score line. This victory secured them the 2nd runners-up position, a significant achievement in a tournament filled with exceptional talent.

This achievement was made possible through the tireless efforts of the players and the unwavering support they received. Special gratitude is extended to Mr. Dinith Pathiraja, Head Coach of the tennis team, for his dedicated guidance and expertise that prepared the team for success. Heartfelt thanks also go to Mrs. Nishanthi Vidanage, Director of the Department of Physical Education, and Miss Nayomi Karunarathne, in charge of the team behalf of the department, for their continuous encouragement and invaluable contributions to the team’s progress. The Sports Council of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura also played a crucial role in providing essential resources and logistical support.
