Japura Warna 2024 – A Glorious Night Painted in the Hues of Victory

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura has long been a cradle of champions across various fields, demonstrating that this prestigious university not only produces winners but also inspires future generations. The Colors Awarding Ceremony was recently held to recognize and celebrate the outstanding athletes of the university. This event honored sportsmen and sportswomen who showcased exceptional talent in both national and international arenas throughout 2024.

The 48th Colors Night, ‘Japura Warna 2024,’ was successfully held on March 21, 2025, at the University Bandaranaike Hall, celebrating the outstanding sports achievements of students from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. This prestigious event was organized by the Physical Education Unit of the university, with Senior Professor M. M. Pathmalal, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest.

This night held great significance for the sports stars in the university, who showcased remarkable dedication and excellence throughout the year. The university secured the Overall Women’s Championship, Overall Men’s Championship, and the Overall Championship at the Inter-University Championships 2024. A total of 589 athletes, representing 36 teams across 23 sports disciplines, were honored at the event. Among them, 37 students were recognized as “Best Players,” while 28 students received Special Awards for their exceptional performances at both national and international levels, bringing pride to the university through their remarkable achievements in various sporting arenas.

The event was graced by Senior Professor Pradeep Jayaweera and Professor K. L. Wasantha Perera, the Co-Chairmen of the Sports Advisory Board. Additionally, distinguished alumni, including Mr. Kamal Gamini Silva (Managing Director of KND Group and President of the Sports Alumni USJ), Mr. Ranjith Iddamalgoda, and Senior D. I. G. Sujeewa Madawaththa (Secretary of the Alumni Association USJ), were present, adding prestige to the occasion. A special mention was given to Professor Narada Fernando, Chairman of People’s Bank, along with his team, for their continued support and partnership. Outstanding Sports Achievements          

The most coveted awards of the night, the Most Outstanding Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year, were presented to Tharushi Himahansika Weerasekara and R. Thushyanthana, respectively, for their exceptional performances in their respective sports.

Most Outstanding Sportswoman – Tharushi Himahansika Weerasekara

A fourth-year student in Allied Health Sciences, Tharushi Himahansika Weerasekara showcased extraordinary skill in chess. Her accomplishments include:

  • UK Cane Challenge Trophy – Winner
  • 6th Carrom World Cup (Women’s Doubles) – 3rd Place
  • 6th Carrom World Cup (Women’s Team) – Runners-Up
  • 6th Asian Carrom World Cup (Women’s Team) – Runners-Up
  • 48th National Sports Games 2024 – First Place

Most Outstanding Sportsman – R. Thushyanthana

A student from the Faculty of Applied Sciences, R. Thushyanthana displayed exceptional talent in karate. His remarkable achievements include:

  • Asian Karate Championship – 2024
  • Sri Lanka National Karate Championship 2024 (Above 21 Years Male Kumite -55kg, 1st Place)
  • Sri Lanka National Karate Championship 2024 (Senior Male (2)Kata, 1st Place)
