USJ’s Boxing Star Umayanga Mihiran Dominates at the 97th National Championships

The 97th Sri Lankan National Boxing Championship kicked off in grand fashion at Galle Face Green, marking a historic moment as the nation’s biggest boxing event was held outdoors. Among the standout performances on the finals  was none other than Godakandalage Pasindu Umayanga Mihiran, an undergraduate of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, who not only delivered a flawless performance but was also crowned the Most Outstanding Boxer of the tournament.

A bronze medallist at the ASBC Asian Elite Championships, Umayanga entered the ring with high expectations and lived up to his reputation. Facing Gayan Indika Bandara from the Navy, a veteran in the sport, he put on a masterclass in boxing. Controlling all three rounds with superior footwork, speed, and precision, he secured a unanimous decision victory, proving once again why he is regarded as Sri Lanka’s No.1 in his weight class.

This year’s National Championships, organized by the Tri Forces and Police and endorsed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Bureau, featured over 100 of the country’s top boxers, with teams from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police battling for supremacy. With the presence of Deputy Sports Minister Sugath Thilakarathne, and Sri Lanka Boxing President Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara, the tournament highlighted the growing status of Sri Lankan boxing on the international stage.

Standing out among the best, Umayanga’s performance earned him the highest individual honor—the Most Outstanding Boxer Award, a testament to his dominance, skill, and relentless pursuit of greatness. His achievement not only solidifies his position as Sri Lanka’s No.1 in his weight class but also enhances his chances of representing the country at future international competitions.

As an undergraduate of University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Umayanga Mihiran is an embodiment of dedication, balancing both academics and elite-level sport. His success is an inspiration to fellow students and young athletes, proving that with discipline, passion, and perseverance, excellence is within reach. With his latest national triumph, Sri Jayawardenepura University Boxing Team stands proud, cheering on its champion as he continues to bring glory to both his alma mater and Sri Lankan boxing.
